Metrowater Press Release: MONITORING DEVICES EARLY WARNING SYSTEM FOR OVERFLOWS
Early warning monitoring devices fitted at dry weather wastewater overflow hotspots across the city are helping Metrowater reduce the amount of wastewater spilled into streams and harbours.
Of the 15 overflow monitoring devices being trialled across Auckland two have already helped prevent potentially damaging wastewater overflows and mitigate possible harm to the environment.
Dry weather overflows occur when wastewater overflows into the environment because of a pipe break or blockage and getting the spill contained and cleaned up before waterways are affected is always the priority for Metrowater's maintenance crew.
Earlier this month a tributary of Meola Creek was protected from a potential overflow thanks to effective monitoring and quick thinking. The emergency bypass pipe in a designed overflow at Brighton Rd had been fitted with a monitoring device which alerted Metrowater engineers to the situation. The response team were able to identify and unblock the pipe before the overflow discharged into the creek.
